5. Captain’s Report.
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen.
Well. Here we are at the end of another year in Weymouth Golf Club’s history.
A year we hope will never be repeated. A year of unprecedented times in the midst of a pandemic, the like of which we have never seen before. Now we can see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel with the vaccine programme in full swing helping to protect us all. But let’s not think we are immune to catching COVID-19 we must stay focussed.
It has again been a great privilege and honour to wear the badge of office of Weymouth Golf Club for a second time, and very nearly for a 3rd period. However, that wasn’t to be.
The Club Captain would normally stand in front of you at the AGM. To honour the success of all our teams and individuals, who played for Club, County and Country. But alas the pandemic put paid to all those events happening.
However. We did manage to salvage our own main Trophy events. Many thanks to the Ladies, Gents and Seniors Competitions Chairs, plus Dan and Mark in the Pro Shop, for giving us some joy this year.
The shortened honour’s list for 2019/20
Club Champion -: Scratch – Sam Rolls Handicap – Derek Puckett
Ladies Champion -: Molly Kington
Seniors Arthur Clarke -: Anthony Green
Congratulations to all our champions. I send my best wishes to all those that will represent Weymouth Golf Club in this coming season. With this year’s season just about to commence, we are hopeful of a full schedule of competitions, throughout all the sections. So good luck everyone, play well.
This year’s AGM is another first for Weymouth Golf Club, is going virtual due to government restrictions.
It will be as near to a normal AGM but for the section “Any other business”
to replace this, the Management Board will be calling an EGM as soon as these restrictions have disappeared.
We have 5 places to be filled this year on the Management Board. One is up for re-election, our Finance Director Steve Dewy.
We have to fill the other 4 positions. We need new blood on the MB and hopefully we will have them. To bring back the structure, harmonious efficiency of the MB, back to what its was brought in to do. To run this great club for the membership in a two-tiered system.
Don’t be put off if you see names already nominated, its still open to any of you from the membership.
If you want to give something back to this club, now’s the time.
These have been uncertain times. In health and financial.
On the health side please take care of yourselves, we are nearly there.
On the financial side. The government have done their best to support us all. As you the membership have given Weymouth Golf Club in this unprecedented year.
We have done our best to easy the financial strain on your yearly subscription.
However, we must keep this great club solvent and going forward. Now these unprecedent times are drawing to a close, we must look forward to the future of Weymouth Golf Club. There will be a need to inject extra finance into the club.
We have an aging drainage system that requires upgrading. As we have found out over the past years of restricted golf due to the wet winters.
The port-a-cabins at the rear of the club and the buggy shed are in need of replacement.
The Buggy paths?? Well, we tried the matting, alas the material was not fit for purpose and the looks aren’t best pleasing to the eye. So they will now require being constructed as the other hard surfaced paths.
We should be looking to increase our yearly subscription in the coming years. We must keep this great club going forward and not to stagnate.
My thanks to the members of the Golf Committee and the Management Board. A unique year. With the extra stress and strain of the pandemic, plus the continuous snipping at the MB, by the very low minorities of the membership.
To those few I say. The membership voted for the Management Board to serve the membership. Those people work very hard, to continue the running of Weymouth Golf Club in an efficient way. So please let them conduct their duties in a fair and level flatform. If you have a query or find you have to raise a topic. Do it with courteous correspondences not in the way of vexatious or defamatory correspondence.
Last off. My thanks to all our staff that make’s Weymouth Golf Club a place you want to be at.
To Dan in the Pro shop, He’s not had the best start in his first venture into being a Head Professional. But Dan has always got a smile and a good word to say on everything, Mark has grown with Dan and they are both a credit to this club.
John and Nikki in the office. Without those two we couldn’t operate in the way that’s we do.
Rob our new Head Green keeper and his staff, they gave us back a course we had become accustom to play. After the dreaded bugs eat first our greens then the fairways. Great work guys.
Leigh and his staff, for serving up the best food we’ve had here at WGC for many a year.
To Gareth and his staff in always keeping our thirst down and us informed on all the woes of the world.
Bill Fryman who keeps the area around the clubhouse tidy.
I would just like to take this opportunity to wish Pat Crane your new Club Captain all the very best in his year. To the Ladies and Seniors Captains in their year of office, and to the new members of the MB. I wish you all the very best.
It just remains for me to sign off for the very last time. It’s been an honour and privilege to be you Club Captain, for that I thank you.
Take care and go enjoy your golf now it’s been returned to us.
David Picton
